” Who Moved my Cheese” by Spencer Johnson is a book that I recently read. It was recommended by a colleague and Professor Turki. My colleague encouraged me more and more to read it by choosing a small paragraph from the book and reading it to me. I got very interested into reading it and I immediately borrowed the book from her. The moment I started reading it I couldn’t but finish the book at once.
Who moved my cheese is a famous book that is one of the best-selling books in the market. Its is a motivational book, the main idea is how to deal and cope with change in life and work. The book describes change and reactions to change by two mice and two little people that live in maze. The story begins when a group of school friends gathered together for dinner. They discuss changes that happen in their life, relationships, and family life. One of the friends mentions how change no longer bothers him after he heard a story about these two mice Scurry and Sniff, and the two little people Hem and Haw. Hem and Haw are happy because they live beside a big cheese which is their favorite food.
Unlucky, one day they find the cheese is gone. What happens is that they get mad and frustrated because the cheese is gone and they think the cheese was stolen from them. They go hungry and this what makes things worse. Meanwhile, Scurry and Sniff quickly accept the loss of the cheese and go off looking for new cheese.Johnson’s message here is that loss is not the end of the world. Instead of seeing change as the end , we should see it as the beginning of something new and better. We should learn to cope and adjust with change with a bit of motivation.
In my opinion, this is a great and wonderful book to read. I don’t think it was a coincidence for me to read this book at this phase of my life. I am in a transition stage in life due to being a graduate this semester. As in one month I will be facing a big change in life. I will be no longer a student. I have never not been a student and this is a new situation for me. I think I will not easily cope because I am deeply attached to my university, instructors, lectures, colleagues, and even studying! The next phase in life which is work, holds many responsibilities. I look forward to the future and what it holds for me. Through this book, I am ready for this change and I will deal with it in a positive way. There was a sentence in the book in the book that I liked and took my attention which is I quote: “If you do not change, you can become extinct because life is all about change after change. There is no such thing called stability or else life will be boring.”
In conclusion, we should seek healthy change and tolerate the ambiguity that life holds for us.
